So the Arts Council of Brazos Valley recently launched their new website. While more interactive and apparently easier to update than the previous version, it is somewhat cluttered and limited.
The previous run of the website was static html. There were some really nice design touches to it: the look was artsy but still clean and professional; there was some really nice flash work in there to make certain features pop. The downside was that it was not dynamic: all modifications and updates had to be performed by a web professional. Further, the old calendar of events was a horrific but usable copy/paste from Excel. Finally, the thing just wouldn't render well in my cell phone-- when I'm on the road, I like to know what events are happening on the go!
This new one has a nice new feature-- some apparent discussion forum. I couldn't figure out how to make a new account, though, so it looks to be an admin-push only discussion.. That means the site's content is at risk of becoming as stale as a static website once the initial steam wears off (or what steam? There are currently two posts under the same number of topics..). The site's design is creative, but somewhat cluttery in appearance. Lots of flurry (that's kind of cool) in the graphics, too many fonts and font styles.. Scrolling news boxes are no good on a website-- a site is meant to be interactive. If you want to build a self-running, stand-alone information kiosk, then scroll away, but a website needs to put the user in control. The Community Calendar of events is a usability nightmare-- only better than the previous version in that it is administerable by a site administrator without a web site editor.
My recommendations: simplify the design.. cut the font clutter both in the Flash and in the site's body text, cut the scrolly news eye candy, swap out for a more decent calendaring system, and open the forum to the public. I really like the idea of reviews-- In fact, that was part of my original proposal. I had devised a system whereby anyone can post a public event, and anyone can comment on it: it serves both those who want to attend and who missed (and would like to catch another showing of the same or by the same reputable group).
Kudos to the Arts Council for trying something new, shame-shame for not taking advantage of community volunteers like myself to provide the best possible face to a very important, arts-, community- and city-representative umbrella organization.
