Drupal Development Environment on Mac
Thought I would catalog my journey of setting of new MacBook for development of Drupal. For this, I imagine I will need a LAMP stack (I've read that it's better not to use the one that comes with Mac for some reason?) and decent code editor.
I am coming from Windows/Linux
First a quick word: I am a mac n00b. From MicroCenter in Houston, Texas I just bought a new MacBook for $799 after $200 in-store rebate. I have been looking to replace my Windows Vista with cygwin laptop for a while, and this was the way to go, I am convinced. So far, I only miss the scroll-click to close a Firefox tab.
Let's begin, shall we? Install LAMP on MacBook
First thing's first.. This article suggests native Apache on the mac is painful and speaks in favor of MAMP. Install MAMP, done.. moving on!
Created first database: "testdrupal" of course. Ok, that was easy. Default password for root is "root", unlike any other mysql installation (guess I was misled by Aral-- he's a great speaker, btw).
Hmm.. Default MAMP webroot is under Applications. Is this a Mac thing? I would opt for putting htdocs (and vhosts) outside this folder in the old world. Any comments here?
Download the latest Acquia drupal installation and place the contained subfolder under /Applications/MAMP/htdocs, rename it, and hit it: http://localhost:8888/testdrupal
Set up repository (git)
Got my git set up as well.. That was easy enough:

So.. the big question: What Text editor to use?
I've heard great things about TextMate and Coda. Also Epresso looks nice. I think TextMate will be the most comfortable place to begin.. Let's find out!
Why Acquia drupal?
I just did the MAMP/Drupal install yesterday while we were at Vineyard. But I used the 'default' Drupal from Drupal.org. What made you go with the Acqui install? I know that's Dries' company, but what are the functional diffs?

Hey- Sorry to miss this post until today..! I used the acquia distribution just for ease of having a fistful of preloaded modules like admin_menu, views, cck... Shortly thereafter, however, after running my first drush up to update the entire instance (well, and some time after that in fact, once I figured out what was going (wr)on(g)), I abandoned the acquia distribution. It's just not for me-- I'm plain vanilla with a profile now. ymmv.

This is what actually worked for me because most of my nodes are blog entries. The brackets are necessary for my version of MySQL too. I changed the underscores to hyphens because that's supposed to produce more findable URLs.
